"The elderly and home-bound citizens are often the forgotten among us. They are quiet. They are not visible. They are lonely. They have lived long and sometimes hard years. The volunteers at Interfaith Volunteer Care Givers strive to give them companionship, recognition, respect, and even assistance to lighten up their lives. The thank you notes and calls we get are testimony to how grateful and appreciative the recipients of our care giving really are. Just a simple one hour visit or an occasional phone call can be the bright spot in their week. We have hopes and plans for expanding our services to help fill some of the unmet needs that we witness every day in the work that we do. We are always seeking additional dedicated board members, volunteer staff, and funding as we strive to meet those needs."
- N. H. “Skip” Borgerson, Jr., Board Chair
Elderly persons who need help to continue living happily in their own homes have been served by the Interfaith Volunteer Care Givers of Greater New Haven program since 1984. The program brings people in need into supportive relationships with caring volunteers. Interfaith Volunteer Care Givers helps older men and women remain in their own homes with dignity as long as possible; offers support to families in difficult and demanding circumstances; combats the isolation all too prevalent among elderly persons and works with congregations to develop effective care-giving ministry and outreach to members and non-members to put faith into action.
IVCG is a 501(c)(3) organization which means that it is a non-profit organization to which individuals may make donations that are recognized by the IRS as "charitable gifts" on your tax return.
Our funding comes in the form of contributions from generous individuals and organizations as well as grants from the Agency on Aging of South Central Connecticut and other grant providers.
We help faith congregations to create and manage elder care groups within their own organizations. The members of these groups are dedicated to making "friendly visits" and providing occasional transportation for members in their own congregations who are in need and to those in the surrounding cities and towns. We train the volunteers and remain a resource to guide them as they provide their volunteer services.
For those individuals who are not associated with a faith congregation having an elder care group and who wish to volunteer or who are in need of services, we act as a group coordinator by matching volunteers to those in need.
